Airport Body Scanner vs 12-Year-Old Girl – Thoughts?

Imagine your 12-year-old daughter, or son for that matter, coming home from a trip with their friend and their family and the first thing they tell you about isn’t the sites they saw while away but how they were hauled off by airport security on the way home. Then finding out when she tells you what happened that she was put through a body scanner and not just any body scanner – the one that sees through your clothes!

This St. Petersburg Times article doesn’t get into exactly what happened but it appears this young lady from Baltimore who was travelling with her friend and her friend’s father was separated from them without proper explanation or the adult guardian being told that she would be taken to another scanner. It also doesn’t say if she was told what they were going to do or explained how the scanner works. If she wasn’t, that’s just wrong!

Now I know that there is always the question about flight safety and you never know who you can trust and blah, blah, blah but come on, this is a 12-year-old girl. Yes, there are some tards out there who strap illegal substances, or worse, to their kids or put them into baby carriers and these people should just be …well never mind.

Signs posted or not about the use of body scanners, when you’re about to scan a kid I think it’s their job to ensure that the parent or guardian of the child is fully aware of the options available and their right to say no to the scan. Not that a full body pat down is any better, trust me I’ve had it done while flying home from Portland, Oregon. (They don’t appreciate you telling them they could have at least bought you dinner before the grope, by the way)

I think the security people in this situation really messed this one up. I know they don’t always have time to fully explain what’s going on but when it comes to children I think they need to make the time.

What are you thoughts?

What’s on your Bucket List?

Former US President Bill Clinton has revealed his bucket list which includes things as simple as living long enough to see the birth of his grandchildren to more ambitious goals like climbing Mount Kilimanjaro before the snow melts due to global warming.

I got to thinking about all the things I’d like to do before I go. Here’s a sample of what is on my list:

So what is on your bucket list?

Things that make you go hmmm…

I don’t know why but I found this completely hilarious. Apparently someone in Boise, Idaho had the brilliant idea to dump condiments into their local library’s book return box. Not once, but on numerous occasions.

There didn’t seem to be a condiment of choice either. No prejudice when it comes to condiments here. This brainiac used maple syrup, corn syrup, ketchup and mayonnaise to keep things interesting.

Now you’d think that the person doing this would be some bored teenager who doesn’t know what else to do with their time. Nope, guess again! It’s a 74 year old lady!!

Don’t believe me, check it out for yourself. Click here.

Your teen needs to see this ad about texting *it's graphic & may not be for everyone* http://alturl.com/49g6b

More and more places around the world are adopting policies about the use of cellular phones while driving. Laws are being put in place that regulate and in most cases eliminate the use of cell phones while operating a motor vehicle.

I was talking to a friend of mine last night and I shared with him the Embrace Life – Always Wear Your Seatbelt ad I posted about the other day. He then asked if I had seen the UK public service announcement ad about texting while driving, which I had not.

This ad took my breath away. If more ads like this one were shown in North America I think that we would have less motor vehicle accidents caused by cell phone use while driving. I’m not sure if the ads currently used here are effective enough. My guess is that they aren’t.

This ad makes it very clear about could possibly happen when you’re more focused on your cell phone than the road. I know that I’ve been in a car with someone who was driving while texting and that I had to say more than once to “watch the road” as the car was beginning to drift.

If you have a teenager, they need to see this!

This ad is a little more than 4 minutes long and contains content that may be unsuitable for younger viewers due to its graphic nature.

In researching the best outlets for social media management and driving up SEO I came across a list of the Top 20 Sites and Engines. It ranks everything from what the best social media sites are, to the best/most used search engines, etc.

This list was created by Hitwise, a global online competitive intelligence service that helps their clients protect and grow their market share through the application of internet measurement data. They measure the largest sample of internet users - 25 million worldwide, including 10 million in the United States in order to allow their clients to understand internet behavior and competitive activity through data that is unmatched in timeliness, depth and breadth.

Incredible Video, http://embracethis.co.uk//

Normal 0 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4

We all know it. We’ve all heard it many times growing up. Now there’s an ad playing in the UK and that is spreading across the web like wildfire spreading that message again. ‘WEAR YOUR SEAT BELT”.

I got the link to this video in my email this morning, sent to me by my grandparents. Normally I don’t look at stuff like this but for some reason I felt compelled to click the link and see what it was they sent along to me. I’m so glad I did. I’ve never in my life seen an ad with such a powerful message and put together so beautifully.

My understanding is that this ad was created by a man in the UK who just had the desire to create it. He is not affiliated with any association or being paid by any company to put this ad out. He is just a guy with a message and a strong desire to share it. His message is clear, “Embrace Life – always wear your seatbelt”.

Check the video out and share it with those you love. Due to copyright protection I can’t post the video directly into this blog but please click here to take you directly to his page.

Have a fantastic day and embrace life,

3 Days of Selena Gomez and counting...

It’s been 3 days straight of listening to Selena Gomez’s CD Kiss & Tell being played over and over again as my 7-year old dances around the house singing the lyrics to every song. It was cute the first day watching my daughter sitting on the sofa reading the lyrics out of the CD insert while each song played and watched as it progressed during the 3rd playing of the CD to dances that interpreted each song.

On the second day the CD blasted from her bedroom repeatedly as she made her bed, reorganized everything on her bookcase, the top of her dresser and every drawer in her room. She even tossed some stuffed animals that have been hanging around forever. Yay for the CD!!!

We’re now on day 3 and my daughter is sitting at the kitchen table painting her daily master pieces. I can hear her softly singing along with the songs as each one plays. Know what the kicker is? I’m singing along with the darn CD too!!

Granted Selena is not the best singer in the world but her tunes are catchy and energetic. There’s even a cover version of Canadian singer Fefe Dobson’s ‘As a Blonde’ that is done really well. Think my favourite song on the CD is 'Falling Down'

I remember painfully watching Barney with my daughter when she was younger and seeing this adorably cute little girl on there, who I now know was Selena Gomez, and thinking that kid is going to be one to watch. Who knew that a few years later my daughter would be watching her on television again this time on Wizards of Waverly Place, sporting a Wizards backpack with a huge pic of Selena on it every day going to school and blaring her CD throughout the house.

Who knows, maybe Selena Gomez is going to be Disney’s answer to the loss of Hannah Montana when Miley Cyrus hangs up her crown.

I love this website! http://nutritiondata.self.com/

I came across the NutritionData website the other day and I must say I absolutely LOVE it! I’ve been playing around with it the last few days and finding it fun and very informative. The site provides so much information that there may be only portions of it that you’ll use as it is easy to become overloaded with the information available; but for those who are interested in exactly what makes up the foods they eat this site will be a great tool.

What I like about this site is that it breaks down the nutrient value of each food further than I’ve seen on any other site. It also determines the estimated Glycemic Load (eGL) as well as the Inflammation Factor (IF) of each food. The eGL tool is great for those living with diabetes and the inflammation factor is awesome for those with heart disease, arthritis and other inflammation related health issues. Inflammation is where all disease stems from but that’s another blog entry.

Something I found this morning was the daily needs calculator. This handy little tool determines what your caloric and nutrition needs are based on your gender, age, weight and lifestyle. It then gives you the option with the simple click of a button to take that information and update your individual daily needs profile saving you the time to manually enter this information like on so many other websites. Keep in mind that the recommendations made are generalized and that they still may require some tweaking on your part but still, a very cool tool.

If you’re working with a nutritionist or personal trainer this site allows you to email a copy of your daily report to them or to download a copy of the report to your computer.

On the downside, this site does not (at least from what I’ve seen so far) track information for more than a day at a time. So if you’re on a weight loss plan, for example, you’ll still need to use another calorie tracker for your food and exercise journals in order to track weekly progress.

Overall I think this is site awesome and I haven’t even been through the whole thing yet. Check it out for yourself and see what you think.

New blog to keep in touch...woohoo!

Hiya! This is a blog I’ve just started to talk a little bit about things I find of interest, useless information I come across and silly random stuff. It’s also a place for a little self promotion – I am a social media manager after all. *smiles*

So, consider yourself warned. I’m here and I’m not doing away. Heehee

Hope you enjoy the posts I make. That you’ll be able to find them of use or at least entertaining.

Have an incredible day!!
